July 2015 Birchbox Review

I’m baaaaack, and back dating!  I’ve been sitting on these reviews for awhile.  Sometimes, it takes me awhile to try my products, mostly because I’m hoarding them.  Or because I’m hiding them from BL and then I forget where I hid them.

I was so excited with this box!  With the exception of the Supergoop, these were all new products to me, which was a pleasant surprise, considering Birchbox has been pretty good at sending me doubles lately.

Jam packed with a variety of products, I couldn’t wait to dive right in.  The lip gloss was very intimidating, and I wasn’t sure what to do with the oil, but I’ll get to all that:

Juliet Has a Gun: Not a Perfume:

Perfume, perfume, perfume!!  I’m always pumped to get perfume, because I’m not one of those people who can settle on one fragrance.  There are apparently some people, like my mother, who wear one scent.  My mother has been wearing her’s for over 30 years.  Her stuff smells like it even after she has washed it.  This perfume is the exact opposite of her pungent Clinique Aromatics Elixir.  It is light and airy, with a distinct yet familiar scent.  It is neutral enough to wear during the day at the office, but interesting enough to wear out in the evening.  At $90.oo for a 50ml bottle on the Birchbox website, it’s too rich for my taste; however, I am saving up my points and waiting for a good coupon.

RUSK Heatshift Re-Styling Cream:

This stuff is a miracle in a bottle!  I am someone who frequently goes days without washing their hair, I’m always looking for a new way to help hold style, not to mention spruce up a day old look.  Recently, one of my tricks has been to divide my hair into two pony tails and curl the ends.  Cut the rubber bands, and BOOM! instant adorable curls.  Now, add in a little of this re-styling cream, and a little of my new favorite hairspray (which you’ll learn about in another review I promise), your curls are going to last all day.  Not to mention that with a little dab of your new next day best friend, and your curls will not only stay, but they’ll be smooth and airy.  Listed on Birchbox for $18.00 for 3.4oz, this will soon be finding it’s way into my bathroom.  As soon as my sample runs out that is.

Jouer Daily Clarifying Treatment Oil:

I’ll admit, even with the hot pink lip gloss included in this box, I was still the most confused by this “face oil”, but I decided to give it a try.  My skin is very combination, however I try to avoid any additional oil, as my skin can lean toward being oily.  So I gave it a quick wash, dried it, and spread a few drops along my brow and nose and cheeks, and rubbed it in.  There was a slight tingling sensation all over my face, and I was left with a light, dewy glow.  It was the perfect mositroizer to go under my CC cream.  And this tiny little bottle has lasted me forever.  Priced at $48.00, it is a little expensive, but if it lasts as long as the sample, it will be well worth it.

Supergoop! Anti-Aging City Sunscreen Serum SPF 50:

I’m not someone who typically wears sunscreen, so I can’t really tell you if this worked or not.  My face didn’t get burnt on my recent trip to the beach, where I was all too excited to whip out my purse sized sunscreen, until my friend pulled out her Costco sized bottle of SPF 70 and began to slather herself in it.  So I applied the Supergoop! to my face, and the SPF 70 over the rest of my body, because she came to the beach 3 times a week, and I hadn’t been since last year and had no base tan.  I didn’t get sunburned, and the sunscreen didn’t run in my eyes, so all in all, a win.  Would I spend $18.00 on a full sized one?  No way.  Not when I can get double that anywhere else.

and last but not least…

stila look at me liquid lipstick trio:

My initial thoughts on this sample was, holy shit that is a lot of pink.  Very very pink.  And so I tried it on.  And to my astonishment, it didn’t rub off on anything!  But it was really fucking pink.  Like, Pink’s hair pink.  So while this lip gloss, lipstick hybrid has amazing non rub power, I’m not sure I will ever be brave enough to wear it anywhere.  Maybe on Halloween.

I’ll end this review by giving you a treat.  I worked myself up to taking a selfie in the really pink stuff.  For your viewing pleasure:

P.S.- one of the reasons I don’t wear lip gloss or lipstick or anything really other than a tinted lip balm is because I cannot properly apply it.

Sunday Fun Day Round Up

Something I would like to start doing on Sunday is giving a rundown of all the great things from this week.  So to start you out, here are some products I am currently obsessing over:

1.) Pink Grapefruit Make-Up Removing Wipes

I purchased these at Marshalls, and for the love of god like everything else I find there, I CANNOT find it in the real world.  But anyway, these are great for lazy people like me who cannot be bothered to take off their makeup at night.  Just whip one out and wipe me down.  There are a butt ton of these floating around out there, so find one that fits your budget (some of them are expensive!) and that smells good, and buy them.  Keep them in your bathroom next to your toothbrush.  After you brush your teeth, wipe off your makeup.  Seriously, it takes 45 seconds.

2.) Lolli Tint by Benefit

So this little lovely came in a set that i impulse purchased from HSN when I was feeling the need for some extra glam.  You can find it here or at any Sephora or such, although I have to say the price on the package is good considering it runs around $30 by itself.  So basically, it looks like a nail polish, with a similar consistency, if not a little runnier.  You paint it on your face in 3 lines, and then quickly rub and blend it in to your foundation, leaving your cheeks with a hint of pinkish glow.  WARNING: If you don’t rub it in fast enough, you will basically be walking around with faint pink warrior stripes on your face.  BONUS: It can also be used as a lip tint, and pairs AMAZING with the LolliBalm, which I received in my Glam Bag but refuse to purchase because $18 for chap stick, ahem, sorry, lip balm is insane.

3.) submissive Eyebase by Be A Bombshell Cosmetics

There are many, many reasons why I love this base.  It came to me in an Ipsy bag, and it has lasted FOREVER.  Not only does a little go a long way, but when I’m in a hurry (aka I have 5 minutes to put my makeup on and get out the door) it doubles as an eye shadow.  You can buy it here, and live it up!

In other news, I quit smoking.  I have like 57 puffs, but I have settled on the iTaste vv, which was given to me.  I’m currently puffing on Fantasia Flavored E-Liquid: Guava Infusion 12mg nicotine.  I’m feeling ok, but I’ve been puffing like my life depends on it.  I am afraid, that when I am tested, I’ll run back to those burning little sticks.

I also went for a run 2 days in a row.  It’s the same mile run that I’ve been doing, and today I did it a whole lot faster than I did it yesterday

FullSizeRender (8)FullSizeRender (7)

Yesterday’s run is on the left, today’s is on the right.  I felt great today, and I wasn’t dying when I finished.

And finally, I took a stand against the hoard of recipes that I have stashed, and organized my ones from the Seneca Lake Wine Trail into a handy composition book.

IMG_5205 IMG_5206 IMG_5207

It’s about 100 pages of recipes and wine pairings from the various wineries surrounding the lake.  Each year, they publish their pairings, and I somehow downloaded all of them and they were sitting in a stack on my end stand.  Now, they’re in my collection of cookbooks, complete with plenty of room for notations.

All and all, a great weekend.  Now, to unwind, and get ready for the long week ahead.

February 2014 Birch Box Review

febbbrevSo this month, I have to say my Birch Box was one of my favorites.  I can say that I really enjoyed each and every product in this box, and I plan on purchasing most of them.  So let’s dive right in:

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner:

FullSizeRender IMG_5239

I am a disaster with liquid eyeliner.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  I am so jealous of the girls who can do an awesome Cat-Eye because I end up poking myself in the eye and It gets all over my face and I have to redo all my makeup.  But, there is something magic about this liquid liner.  First of all, I use it every day, and it doesn’t seem to run out.  Also, the pointed tip helps go from a skinny line on the inside of the eye, to a calligraphic point on the end, which helps embellish the whole Cat-Eye look.  So while I can’t do any of the fancy super cute looks yet, but I’m working on it.

Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet:

So this is billed as a “moisture rich” face lotion.  Somehow, there is wine in it.  I’m not sure why the wine belongs on my face and not in my mouth, but it is a really nice moisturizer.  The only problem is the price point.  I have a hard time spending $40 on face lotion, but this seems to be well worth it.  It smells amazing and I’m pretty sure it would be well worth my precious BB points.

Evologie Intensive Blemish Serum:

FullSizeRender_2 IMG_5240

Oh this little baby.  When they say a little goes a long way, they really mean it with this one.  This sample has lasted me quite awhile, and is my little secret weapon when it comes to unsightly blemishes.  At $35 a bottle, it’s a little steep, but well worth it.  You can use it all over your face, but I like to dap a little bit on a the effected area for 1-2 days, and even after the first day I can see an improvement.  Within a few applications, the blemish in question is barely noticeable.  Once my sample runs out, I will be purchasing for sure.

amika: Nourishing Mask:

I like all of the amika products, especially their blow out spray and dry shampoo, but this was my first foray into their conditioning products.  The sample was small for my hair amount (a lot), so I only got one use from it.  I used it with the No. 4 volume shampoo, and it left my hair pretty silky and smooth.  It smelled nice, but the price point was kind of expensive, and I have a few other masks that I like better, but I was happy to try it and loved they way it made my hair feel, so I guess you get what you pay for.

Juicy Couture Hollywood Royal:

This is the first time I tried a Juicy product, let alone a perfume, so I wasn’t sure what to expect.  It was a nice, light and fragrant perfume, my only criticism was that it didn’t seem to last.  Barely an hour after application, I couldn’t notice it anymore, but maybe other people could?  I really liked the perfume, so I would be willing to give it another try in hopes that it would last longer.

All in all, I very much enjoyed everything in this box.  The products were expensive and nice, everything I have come to expect in the Birch Box products.

January 2015 Birch Box Review

So I am very very late with my reviews.  In fact, I’m like 6 months late.  So unfortunately I have very little original content for some of these products, and many of these posts will be back dated.  But this blog is as much for me as it is for anyone else, and I use it to help me remember which products I love, and those that I would like to forget.  So that being said, I present to you my January 2015 Birch Box Review.

janbbrevSo my menagerie of products for the new year was all in all pretty good.

I’ll start off with the Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45 Shade #1.

I have received far to many bad BB creams, and this was one of them.  I wasn’t impressed by the shade to start with.  It was very light for my skin tone, and it didn’t color correct like I thought that it might.  I instead, had to layer on some bronzer to get the color closer to what my natural shade was.  I also found it goopy, and kind of thick.  I managed to get 2 uses out of it, and truth be told, I think it ended up in the pile of “doesn’t work” that I keep on hand, just in case a girlfriend is over and needs to use something.

The Essential Elements Wake Up Rosemary Body Lotion is up next

I cannot say enough wonderful things about this lotion.  Unfortunately, BL and I were both scraping the bottom of the barrel for the last of this lotion.  It smells, in short, amazing.  It goes on smooth with a strong scent that lasts forever.  That strong scent morphed into a subtle, herb scented hints that paired well with my perfumes, which tend to err on the side of clean and fresh.  Whenever I try to buy this lotion, it is out of stock.  As an overall body lotion, this is phenomenal.

Harvey Prince Hello Liquid Loofah:

I’ll start of by saying that I am not a fan of Harvey Prince Hello in general.  So this “liquid loofah” was a stretch for me.  I didn’t mind the smell, but to be honest it wasn’t anything more that you would get in a hotel.  There was minimal exfoliating going on, and like I said, I’m not a fan of the scent, which was fleeting and didn’t seem to last long.  Maybe paired with the lotion or the perfume, I would have noticed it.  Not to mention, I got about 1 1/2 uses out of the small bottle.  I think it’s safe to say that this product is not for me.

Manna Kadar Lip Locked

Now, for starters, I probably won’t end up purchasing this lip gloss.  I think $24 is CRAZY for a lip gloss, but that seems to be standard fare.  So I guess I’ll just have to settle for my sample.  The color is AWESOME and stays on for awhile and doesn’t rub off.  My hair doesn’t get stuck in it, and it doesn’t flake off.  I like to use a deep lip stain and then apply a swipe.  I keep it in my purse and it is my standard “throw on quick when I need something cute”.  Maybe one day I’ll put my points towards it.

Curl Keeper: by Curly Hair Solutions:

I’ll start off by saying that I don’t have curly hair.  I have puffy hair.  Very puffy hair.  It looks a little something like this when I wake up and don’t straighten it:

FullSizeRender (9)

So I figured out a way to put the Curl Keeper to good use by adding it to my wet hair, and then either braiding it or putting it up into a bun and sleeping on it.  Somehow this magic solution can transform and turn my bushes into waves.

I was pretty happy with the box in general this month.  Hopefully this is a sign of a good year full of Birch Boxes!

December 2014 BIRCHBOX Review

Let me preface this post by letting you know EXCITED I was for this box to get here.  I happened to misplace by debit card (which happens often) and forgot to update my account.  So not only was my Birch SUPER late, but I missed my Ipsy bag!

Now that I got that small disclaimer out of the way, let me tell you how much I loved this box.  I liked everything I tried, and the lip stain REALLY pushed my make-up comfort boundaries.  So as Mario would say… Here we go!

This month my box came jam packed with:

  • Camille Beckman Body Butter
  • BORGHESE Splendore Brightening Makeup
  • Beauty Protector Protect & Oil
  • Mirenesse Mattifinity Lip Rouge
  • Royal Apothic Cuppa Cuppa Firming Tea Treatment Mask

Camille Beckman Body Butter

I got this body butter, and I wasn’t over the moon.  The scent was Midnight Monarch. I’m pretty picky about what I use for a body butter/lotion (my all time favorite being Sweet Violet from Cobble Hill Farms) and this seems average to me.  I enjoy the smell, but the scent doesn’t seem to linger, and I find that it leaves almost a film sort of residue on my skin.  Overall, I’m not unhappy that I got it, it just isn’t something I would purchase.  So it will join the bag of lotions that I keep in my large purse for dry hand emergencies, especially since the sample was tiny.

BORGHESE Splendore Brightening Makeup

That’s me and SamDog and I’m wearing my BORGHESE Splendore Brightening Makeup but you can’t tell since I Instagramfiltered the shit out of that picture.  But seriously, I’m LOVING this makeup, but I’m almost certain I’m not using it according to the directions.  I tried blending it with my BB Cream, but I ended up looking like I was doused with pixie dust.  Like, serious glitter bomb smacked me in the face.  So now I use it as a highlighter, on the top of  my cheeks, my nose and the upper portion of my brow and it works like a dream.  Not to mention the sample was Billy Fucillo huge, and I’m sure it will last me forever.  In fact, the chances of my either losing it or moving on to something new are greater than the chance of it running out.  I’m a fan, and if I run out, I would strongly consider buying it.

Beauty Protector Protect & Oil

This brand has been one of my favorites since getting the spray protector awhile back.  My hair is prone to dryness and overall nastyness down towards the ends.  My sister got this last month and I was super jealous, so when I got it this month I couldn’t wait to try it.  I only needed a small bit, rubbed in my palms and then spread through my hair to see and feel a difference.  I avoided the scalp area, massaging well into my super dry and frayed ends.  I love the smell and I really enjoy what it did for my hair.  It wasn’t oily or weighed down like some oils have left it.  I will more than likely be purchasing this along with the spray protector.  I small amount also worked well to tame some flyaways when I put my hair up.  If you have very oily or greasy hair, err on the side of small amounts with this product.

Mirenesse Mattifinity Lip Rouge

Oh Hello There Gorgeous!  The Mattfinity Lip Rouge was a very bold beauty choice for me.  I generally tend to stay towards nude/bare lips, not just because I’m a smoker or one of those people annoying people who ALWAYS has a water bottle, but also because it just seems loud.  People with brightly colored red lips are generally loud.  Or hookers.  Or both.  Or maybe just Taylor Swift.  I’m none of those things.  Maybe a little loud.  But my fashion style isn’t, and I wore this out with some caution.  I was shocked at how well it stayed on.  No mess stuck to the side of my face from a stray hair, or caked to my teeth or all over my fingers.  And the color last awhile!  I would recommend exfoliating your lips prior to applying, as it seemed to highlight every bit of dried skin on my lips.  I don’t think I would buy the Seoul color sample, but Rome looks nice and light, so maybe I’ll give it a try.

and last but not least

Royal Apothic Cuppa Cuppa Firming Tea Treatment Mask

FullSizeRender (6)IMG_4423

Point 1 of 2 I should make.  The back says to apply and pour yourself a cup of tea, wait 8 minutes and rinse.  I was having a bad day so I poured wine and I’m pretty sure I accomplished the same results.  Point 2: this face mask costs $58 a tube.  I’m sure that is a little crazy.  I’m sorry but $58 is A LOT of money for a mediocre face mask that tingled a little when I put it on, and left my face nice and smooth.  I really liked this mask and would love to keep using it, but it doesn’t accomplish anything that can’t be done with a sugar scrub.  For the price, Birchbox can keep it.

Overall, I was really happy with this box.  I was able to try some products that I wouldn’t purchase due to style and price, and I’m really pumped about that.

Can’t wait to see what’s in store for me next month!

Birch Box November 2014 BUZZFEED BOX Review

Please note all images used are stock images from the Birchbox app.

There are a few things in this world that give me happiness in a raw and simple form.  A new book.  A blank journal.  A warm blanket out of the dryer.  Snail Mail.  And free samples.  Therefore, this new box of samples craze is JUST FOR ME!  So please enjoy my review my November Women’s Birchbox!  (*Of note, once a month Birchbox offers you the choice of a sample.  Sometimes you get to upgrade your box, so I did that with the BuzzFeed Box.)

Let me start off by saying that I loved ALMOST everything in this box.  So lets get started, shall we.

Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips:

I must start by saying that BL and I open our Birchbox’s at the kitchen table and read out loud what we got while showing it off like a kid at Christmas.  So when I read this one out loud, we both giggled.  However, I came back from a weekend outside 10+ hours in the cold and my lips were so sore and chapped that they hurt.  I couldn’t find a regular chapstick, but I remembered by nipple balm!  I spread it over my lips, and in an instant, I could feel my lips returning to normal.  I am now obsessed, and I will be ordering this soon.  I also love that a little goes a long way.  I like to wear it overnight as a lip mask after exfoliating.

Greenlead Candle

For such a little candle, this sure packed a big punch!  I love that it came in a small glass, as I was expecting a votive.  The Splendid Spruce was a very nice compliment to my other holiday scents.  It did burn quite quickly.  I’m not sure that I would purchase this at $17 because I’ve found some pretty nice soy candles for far less, however it was a nice addition to my box.

amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

I’m horrified that this is out of stock right now, because it has become one of my new favorite products.  I’m well known for hating to have to wash my hair any more than I have to.  It takes forever to dry and I always find it looks better slightly dirty.  The Perk Up smells amazing, and does a great job of cleaning up my roots so that I can go as long as possible between washings while still looking and smelling great.  The compact size makes it a perfect fit for my purse.

Mirenesse iCurl Secret Weapon 24 Hour Mascara

I must admit that part of my reason for selecting the pre-picked box was for this mascara.  My sister recieved it in her box and couldn’t stop raving about it.  And now I understand why.  It lengthens and curls my lashes perfectly.  And it will stay on for 24hours, no joke.  I’m one of those girls famous for cleaning up last night’s make up after I roll out of bed, and let me tell you, this mascara sticks.  If it has a downfall, it’s that when it starts to flake, it flakes.  Everywhere.  I like to use it underneath my Smashbox mascara.

Dr. Jart+ Pore Minimalist Mask

I don’t have a lot of great things to say about this mask.  It left my skin feeling nice, but it was weird.  It looks weird on, and it feels weird.  I’m someone who is big on textures, and this mask simply felt slimy.  And it kept sliding off my face.  I ended up having to lay down on the couch for the duration it was on my face to avoid it falling to the floor.  And it’s kind of scary.  All in all, not one of my favorite products.

Hope you enjoyed, and if you would like to skip the waiting list for BirchBox, you can sign up here.
